2026 Trip — Wind River Range, Wyoming
This year we're heading to the Wind River Range in Wyoming, starting from the Elkhart Park trailhead. The Winds are widely considered one of the best wilderness backpacking destinations in the US, and it's an area I've wanted us to visit for a long time.
The current plan is to base out of Marion's house for the trip. From there, we drive to the trailhead at Elkhart Park.
I'd like to stick with the usual 3 night format if that works for everyone. The tentative route takes us toward the Titcomb Basin area, with camps likely around Cook Lake and either Island Lake or Indian Basin. We'll also likely do a day hike into Titcomb Basin itself, which is supposed to be one of the highlights of the range. Fishing in the area is supposed to be excellent.
We'll also be right at the base of Fremont Peak, which at 13,743 ft is the third highest peak in Wyoming. Apparently the route from where we're camping is non-technical, so we could potentially climb it. The views into Titcomb Basin and the surrounding mountains are supposed to be incredible.
Mileage on Day 1 will be a bit longer than what we've usually done to start these trips, though still very manageable. That said, it would probably be a good idea for everyone to get a few hikes or some exercise in during the next few months before the trip. It's good to be in shape.
